John Twemlow, Groups are defined by average speed. This average cannot be determined until near the mid way point of the ride with any degree of reliability. You certainly can not determine average speed 2 kms away from Billings Bridge on a 60+ km ride. I think you might have mixed up "average speed" with "actual speed" at any given moment. But, none of this matters. If you find that you are often being dropped from a group then maybe you should ride with a slower group. I do agree that sometimes that first hill on Riverside is very hard for us vertically challenged (out of shape) people.
Maybe you should lead a group and maintain the speed you want. I am sure your help would be welcomed. Ross D.
