Characterisation: the buzzing persists for 5-15 minutes, does a distinctive "spinning-down" sound when it stops, takes a 5-15 minute break before starting up again.
Re Youngmans, it's a full 2 kilometers away from me, so if it's them I pity the folk in Maitland. Confusingly, they've been an issue in Maitland for a year, but we in Obs only noticed buzzing since 22 or 23 June. I wandered out last night down to the mill, and found Paddy Chapple out investigating. The entrance staff were explaining about warning sirens and ventilation, but failed to furnish any clues as to what machine might be behind that distinctive buzzing and refused to call a manager. It doesn't help that the buzzing stops for up to 15 minutes at a time: "no, no, it's not happening now, you have to wait for it". I observed the buzzing was much louder in Albert Rd / Malta Rd and lower Rochester, and at that point seemed to be coming from a north/north-easterly direction - it's hard to be sure - but both the mill and Youngmans lie that way. It's nothing to do with the mill ventilation on the right, which emit white noise as Trevor points out. Maybe I'll make a trip out to Youngmans and see if their noise matches what I've been hearing, and if not see if I can get a triangulation on the sound from the other side of the river.
