I have already joined the 64bit club. Also go for at least 4GB RAM. If you plan to run VM's even more RAM e.g. 8GB and perhaps a 3/4 core CPU.
If you can afford it, get a fast hard disk e.g. 10,000rpm SATA - 320GB were about $400. Will make a significant performance difference. Would also go for Win7. Myles.
