I went for a a quadcore intel with just 4gb at the momnet and installed 64bit vista because win7 was not quite RTM at that stage.
64bit is definitly worth it. I have had only one issue, and that was printer drivers when trying to use a shared printer, but I solved that by getting a network printer.....for free because it was going to be thrown out :-)

I have already joined the 64bit club. Also go for at least 4GB RAM. If you plan to run VM’s even more RAM e.g. 8GB and perhaps a 3/4 core CPU.
If you can afford it, get a fast hard disk e.g. 10,000rpm SATA – 320GB were about $400. Will make a significant performance difference.
Would also go for Win7.

[Almost] all hardware is 64 bit now. Depends on the operating system you choose. Personally I’d go with Win7 64… Seems very stable and quick to me. Plus at some stage soon you will be writing for Win7 systems, so good to know how they work.

Hi all
 
I'm looking at buying a new PC. Should I spend more money on a 64 bits system or would a 32 bits system be adequate for average software development?
 
Any suggestions are welcome as to what to buy and what not to buy.
