Paul

I was aware of No Machine but not FreeNX, The problem is

1/ Why 'reinvent' the remote procotol and not use RDP or ICA,
If you want to grab market share the easist way is to make it as painless to migrate, also you could use any of the many thinclients avail, I realise that 'NX' clients will appear in time but rapid growth is the inverse of time

2/ The server is still linux, and just as the loss of 16bit will cause howls on Windows, porting to apps linux is much worse, The savoiur may be JRE/Mono

The strategy to break M$ monopoly would be firstly invade the app space (mozilla, open off etal), make WINE terminal server and 16 bit freindly (therefore offering an attractive alternative when M$ pull the 16bit plug) and finally an NX/RDP/ICA proxy so you can but any RDP thin client you want, M$ will be shitting themselves because if they lose their iron grip on then business community it all over rover

In the last few years we have rolled out 1 Linux Server (Mail, Proxy etc) to 1 Windows Terminal Server, I'd love to see this reversed

The problem with Kylix was a tiny demand for Linux Desktops, This

This has been true until fairly recently. Now there is NX
(http://www.nomachine.com/). This is a commercial product. I have used
the NoMachine NX client in conjunction with the FreeNX server
(http://freenx.berlios.de/) and I can tell you that as a user and
administrator of a Citrix farm, NX is approaching the level of Citrix
and possibly exceeds the capabilities of Terminal Services / RDP. There
are issues, of course, but it is getting there.

The leap in Open Source in in apps (Thunderbird, firefox, Opera, Open
Office)

I agree. However I think the apps are now there, whereas they weren't
when Kylix came out.

It will take years for Linux to make a dent in the desktop

Maybe. Inroads are being made and have already been made, though.

Cheers,
Paul
