I went through the xwin-discuss mailman archives (not Jive) from May
2006 to November 2006 and don't see anything. It's possible I missed
it, could you point me at it if you have a link to the thread at all?

Now that it's the future (one year seems reasonable), perhaps you could
ping the xwin-discuss list again and inquire.

Why?
I only have one core contributor grant, and no contributor grants. I
don't find that to be a joke. I haven't asked for contributor status
anywhere else, and don't feel I deserve it anywhere else (except
possibly the OGB community). But even if I did ask, I don't see that as
being a "critical mail."

Yup, I totally agree. Which is why I think you should follow up with
the X Windows community and see if they will give you the grant now.

Certainly - but in this large a community, people have to be proactive
about asking for what they deserve rather than waiting for it to be
doled out. I fully agree that this penalises people who are perhaps too
shy or humble to ask - but that's the reality of the current system.
A tangential topic might be to investigate a better system for this; I
imagine this system impacts contributors/core contributors from cultures
where asking might be perceived as being too forward (e.g. many Asian
cultures) - but that's a different topic.
I think a mail bringing up the topic of contributor grants for yourself
and Moinak to the attention of the X Windows community would be
valuable, and I can't see why it would be denied given all the work you
cited above.

Good luck, I hope your search goes well.

cheers,
