As other contributors to this thread have mentioned, there are
people outside Oracle/Sun who have managed to figure out how to
build onnv-gate, and who do so regularly.
This may be considered a good exercise for OS hackers, but without
proper documentation it's not at all suitable for most users. I.e. if
without any updates to the binary distribution of OpenSolaris, the
expected way to use the most up to date code is to build it from
source - the documentation should be up to date at least.
Is there any docs about this?
I remember using some tutorial when SXDE days...don't know its status.
Is there somebody who maintains this documentation, just in case it
exists? If not, we can start an effort to do it, don't you think?
Thanks, and best regards,
Not really.
The process largely hasn't changed - I believe there are some developer
docs floating around on the Documentation CG pages.
That said, things are a tad more difficult now; since the release is
running behind, IPS packages have not been updated since snv_134. My
first suggestion would be to update to snv_134 and start there.
If all you are interested in is running nightly(1), I would suggest
installing the osnet package and building your tools directly (i.e.
usr/src/tools). I'm not sure if there have been any major dependency
changes between snv_134 and the tip, so YMMV. I had no issues with this
process doing full nightlies on both x86 and SPARC for snv_142.
If you are just interested in uts, the process is slightly less onerous
- you can simply skip installing osnet and build the tools.
Really, don't know how to do it.
Some days ago sent an email about how to install onnv_142 when using
snv_134, I'm still doing some research about the new installed binaries:
http://mail.opensolaris.org/pipermail/opensolaris-discuss/2010-June/057445.html
If your interest is to simply document the process, I would contact the
Documentation CG - they have already amassed a large amount of
documentation, and I'm sure they would welcome any who are willing to
improve the process.
Yes!
I can do this, and will be happy to do it.
To have documents about this process is important for people more used
to install from LiveCD/LiveUSB, and install updates using just one "pkg
image-update" command.
Thanks, and best regards,
HeCSa.

Steve
