For the most part.  You can use any *open* material, and there was 
informal permission to use the SRD as if it were open several months ago 
(if you're just starting now, wait for the SRD to go final.)

You can use anyone's world that you have a right to--you just don't gain 
any *new* right to use someone's copyrighted material, and you lose the 
right to use tradsemarks of anyone in the industry at all.

You can modify the rules as much as you like, but you can't redefine the 
"restricted terms", and you can't include rules for character creation 
or level advancement.  This assumes that you're using the D20STL; if 
you're just using the rules and aren't going to use any trademarks, do 
whatever you want with the darn thing.  :)

That sounds like the best idea to me.  Having some material to show what 
you can do is probably a good thing.

If you can't find any "real" work, give me a hollar and I can set you up 
with some "online projects" that need more fleshing out.
