Right. Understood.

*If* Ryan is correct and WotC is still following that opinion, and lots of products start showing up that describe chargen in other ways (such as through point builds), they'll just change the license. Unlike the WotC OGL, they can change the D20STL at any time, with essentially no warning.

I agree, one must be careful. If one hews close to the line drawn by WotC, they may find that line moved. I think a firm understanding of what WotC is telling you in the d20 STL is important. I studied that puppy very close before deciding to make my product a commercial venture, as should anyone. My conclusion is that I am very safe.

It may not stop/affect you, but i think the person who first asked should be forewarned that its not ironclad safe--while i agree with you that the current license quite clearly only forbids D&D-style chargen, that might be as much because the license is worded sloppily as because that is WotC's intention.

I am sure WotC could find ways to limit products like mine, though it would have to be rather specific, such as specifically saying no point-based system for acquiring feats, for example. Otherwise, for myself, any general approach would hamstring more normal d20 rules, like new base and prestige classes.

There is a time for bingo and there is a time for funerals. Try to keep them separate.
