Beyond any question or doubt. It's thousands of times larger than it could
have ever been in the scattershot 8-bit days. Developers can spend more
time on functionality and interface, and less time on worrying about
learning a new OS.

Microsoft isn't the OS I wanted to win the wars (I'm a machead from way
back) but the advantage of a single dominant OS for developers is
overwhelming. Ask anyone who had to develop separately for the Amiga, the
Atari, the Apple II, the IBM PC, and the TRS-80. Not to mention the
Commodore, the Coleco 'Adam', Sinclair ZX-80, Mattell Aquarius...

Or ask any consumer about the selection of software for their niche machine
in those days. "No, that's the Atari version. You'll have to wait six
months for the Apple II version."
