Uhm, yes, it is different.

Bashing people based on ideology is VERY different from bashing them
based on gender, ethnicity, etc. Since, to a large extent, ideology
defines a persons values, goals, and beliefs, judging them on such is
wholly rational. If NOT values,goals, beliefs, what DO you judge someone
on? Their star-sign?

This does not mean all such judgements are rational or correct, just
that choosing ideology as a basis of judgement is not irrational in
itself.
