You're right, I don't think Ryan wants to bury anybody. His statement of
caution makes that perfectly clear. I think it is very likely that all the
early d20 stuff will turn out just fine in the end.
However, just because we hear the cash-cow mooing doesn't mean we should
downplay the risk. If you do something that *really* isn't allowed in the
final d20 STL, you lose it ALL. It won't matter what your intentions or how
much good faith went into the effort.
But Ryan isn't the copyright holder on the d20 SRD. He's just a guy with a
neat idea who has the ear of the copyright owner. As nice as Ryan has been
about the whole thing we have to keep this in perspective - we are not doing
business with Ryan, we are doing business with Wizards of the Coast. Ryan
is just a very influential broker in the transaction. A hundred things
could happen that had nothing to do with Ryan or this license and the d20
STL would never materialize. THAT is the true risk, because then you'd lose
everything if WotC choose to take it away from you. After all, you've
proudly claimed to have created a derivative work; it's hard to take that
back if they decide to take you to court.
