Netbooks are not illegal.  Under Wotc's online use policy, it is illegal to 
*sell* a netbook or otherwise require compensation for it.

The "thread" that was referred to was a disussion of why it makes more sense 
from some perspectives to publish under the online use policy than under the 
OGL if your work is FAN-based and you are not planning on selling the 
results.
