I don't think this is a major concern. There was a lot of whining back
when 2nd edition was released. I heard the same complaints then that I hear
now... "I don't want to toss out all my old books!" "They're just trying to
make more money!" (as if that were a crime) etc.
While there are still a small minority who continue to use 1st edition
rules, by and large most eventually converted to 2nd edition and eventually
considered it an overall improvement over the previous set. (Albeit a minor
and arguable one.)
I believe that within a year you won't see very many 2nd edition
holdouts. The d20 system is a real improvement over the old AD&D system,
and most people realize that quickly. In fact, the change will probably
occur faster than that from 1st to 2nd, because the improvements are more
significant. (My opinion, of course.)
