No, they haven't. There was one suit against Mayfair, which didn't deal
with character design at all -- it involved trademarks and licensing
issues.

Games such as Runequest and Palladium have systems very similair to D&D.
For that matter, so does Tunnels&Trolls and a host of other games.
TSR/WOTC has never sued any of them.

Dancey (who admittedly is NOT the voice of WOTC legal) has stated in
public that you CAN tack chargen onto the SRD and make it a game -- you
just can't say "Compatible with D&D" or "For use with D20" or any other
use of trademark.

I believe that the upcoming "Series Archer" game from AEG is going to
use the D20 system (from the SRD), but NOT the D20 trademark license,
and WILL include chargen.

There's a lot of very bad law and very bad history on a lot of lists.
