OGC is wonderful, it allows us to share game rules and other stuff with the
people we love. Namely game designers from places like Atlanta and Las
Vegas. It also builds a community, a group of reasonable human beings not
offended by the use of "their" rules in other peoples products. You might
not get payed for OGC, but you get credit, and isn't credit just as good as
money in the bank? That is of course unless the interest rate is
unreasonable, but I digress.

OGC is good, because it makes us pay attention to the teeming posts filling
up our deleted items bin in Outlook express. It also enables us to develop
settings and products without having to re-invent or reverse engineer rules.
The D20 stl is like a giant pair of handcuffs that only open when you say
the magic word "Comply" but OGC is solid gold. Actually it's also solid
credit, which is like saying I have solid gold, but I've never actually
recieved it.

To designate OGC, think of a way to make it look different from non OGC
material. For rules use tag fonts or wingdings for instance, or perhaps have
your 12th grade visual designer and layout person emboss, drop shadow, and
bold stroke all of your OGC. That will definitely make it stand out. That
way there is no confusion. OGC should only be rules, but maybe it should
also be art, since art is content too,and can be pertinent to a game. Maybe
we should make OGC cover miniatures as well, since they can be game content.
What about the OGC designation for player DNA? Can we use my GM genomes as
OGC in a sick gene splicing expirment with GURPS Atomic Horror and D20
Deadlands? Do you see my point?

If you want other people to do the same thing as you when dealing with OGC,
come up with a smart way of doing it, then publish it that way. People like
to steal good ideas, I mean, they like to use them in the same format to
provide the easily confused "Consumer" ( and by consumer I mean mindless
drone) with a recognizable format. If you do something in a smart and easily
reproducible manner, people will emulate it, and that will then become a
defacto standard.

Show me how to do OGC. Don't tell me.

Rob.
