I'd call the Mind Flayers pretty unique, Faust.

more to the point, I don't think it's about the word, "Illithid."  If i 
wanted to make a ship called the "Illithid", and placed it in a very 
different style, it doesn't seem as if WotC would really care, as it's a 
different character entrely.  In _If Thougths Could Kill_, it's a pretty 
clear reference to WotC's "character" of Illithids.

Then again, what do I know?  :)
