realistically, the risks taken by US troops in Afghanistan are pretty 
minimal (for a military action).  heck, statistically, aren't they 
doing better than those driving on US highways, so far?  [7 dead, out 
of how many deployed, for roughly 3 months?]  not trying to belittle 
the risks, just put them in perspective.

but, the more relevant question: why does it matter that they're 
risking life and limb now, rather than in the past?  or do you 
similarly object to all (pseudo-)historical wargames?
