I agree, Jesse. And then we have the worst of the worse for a SUV,,,the
Humvee, AKA Hummer, H2, and H3. The H2 and H3 are satirical affronts to a
real Humvee, and the real Humvee has no business on a public street or
parking lot. Real Humvees belong only in the boonies or on a battlefield,
nowhere else. Hummer, H2, and H3 owners are simply struting their stuff and
showing their bling-bling.

Subject: Re: Bumper Mentality: article on SUV's drivers
You know what, I gotta speak up about this. Why was the station wagon
deemed uncool? I think that they were cool as hell. I saw a Vista wagon at
a car show that ran low 11's in the quarter, and then he could drive home
from the strip and pick up the grocerys. They were a hell of alot more
roomy than a SUV not to mention stable i.e. lower to the ground so they
handle a hellva lot better. What irratates me to no end, is when I am
trying to look down the road to turn left or right and then an SUV will
pull up next to me completly blocking my entire field of vision. The damn
things are like rolling billboards. What good is an SUV anyways? Let me
count the ways in which they are pointless. 1- Not as much room as a truck
so you can't haul stuff larger than a few groceries. 2- They are gas
hungry like a truck so they aren't as good as a car . 3- They are easier
to tip over in a sharp turn than a car. 4- They are still built somewhat
like a car so you can't really use them as 4x4
to go cross country. So what the hell are peoples attraction with em? They
aren't a car. They aren't a truck. The're pointless as either one. My two
cents. Thank you.
Jesse.

The article seems right-on to me! I can't tell you
how many times I've nearly been sideswiped in the '78
98 (bright blue!) and the '88 Town Car...by SUV's. If
you can't see cars THIS big, then you shouldn't be
driving. And I always make it a point to stay out of
others' blind spots. Worse is the headlights that
blind you. I end up adjusting the power mirrors on
the side to put it right back in their faces...one day
will probably get me killed by an aggressor.
I am amazed at the gas station to see how much these
people are paying...and taking too much gas for
themselves. But that's another topic. Funny that it
is (as article says) the environmentalist/tree-huggers
who mostly drive these things which is completely
opposite of their 'beliefs'.
Hopefully, the SUV will get low to the ground and be
safer/less heavy...like a station wagon. More and
more of the cross-overs look like wagons! Station
wagons had so much room and were comfy to drive, but
somehow they were deemed 'uncool'. I'm betting
they'll make a comeback.

A bit of mild obscenity at the beginning. Also, you
have to get past the
initial "I wanna bash liberals" aspect of the
article near the beginning
(odd, I thought liberals were those tree-hugger
types trying to ban the
gasoline engine and rejoicing at $3+/gallon fuel,
not the ones driving the
SUVs..)
Anyway, once you get around the politics, the
information that's more or
less "hard data" is interesting. Some of it
generally well known, some of
the less well-known details a bit on the interesting
side.
I think the case for the personality-type is a bit
overblown and painted
with a bit too broad of a brush, but sometimes when
I drive and
see/try-to-avoid some of the drivers of SUVs, I
start to swear that it
might be true (and I also start to swear in
general!)
