Let's remember some facts:

1. Every voter in Palm Beach county received a sample ballot in the mail
the week prior to the vote.

2. Every voter in Florida could have asked for and been given up to three
additional ballots if they had thought there was any problem with the one
they had completed. This raises a question: are any of the 19,000 spoiled
ballots we hear about in Palm Beach county just the first, second or third
ballot which was replaced by a new one? If so, how many?

3. The Gore campaign (or the Democrat party) hired a telemarketing firm to
call 5,000 Democrat voters in Palm Beach county to suggest that there was a
problem with the ballot during the evening of Nov 7th before the polls were
closed. It is not possible to know, but how many of these people had no
problem with their ballot until this suggestion was made?

4. It is not possible to prepare ANY document in such a way that NO ONE will
be confused. There will always be some who do not get the message, no
matter how well it is presented. Over 432,000 votes were cast in the
presidential election in Palm Beach county. 19,000 is a pretty small
proportion of 432,000.

5. The only truly fair way to do a hand recount in Florida is to recount the
entire state. If the Gore campaign had been interested in fair results they
would have requested a hand recount in all counties. Perhaps the Bush
campaign should have done so in the counties that the Gore campaign avoided.

Bob,

I disagree. This election belongs to the people, not the political parties.
It's all well and good for the "parties" to approve a ballot, but if the
people voting find them confusing or illegal then something needs to be
done. I see the parties pushing ahead, trying to have their will be done.
But quite frankly, I think the voters will needs to be done in Florida. If
that means hand counting to find out exactly the voters intent, so be it.
We can wait a few weeks to make sure that what the voters intended is what
happens.

I do not however think that a revote is possible. Too many voters could
change their votes, and that would not be fair, nor accurate as to what the
votes were November 7.
