[Winona Online Democracy]

I was a Scout. My son was a Scout. I was a co-leader of his Cub
Scout troop. I did not know what I was involved with. I am glad I do
not have to make the decision today about whether to be involved. I
hope the efforts to change the system from within work.
I was shocked by the revelations made during the 60 Minutes show last
Sunday concerning who really runs the national BSA and what their
beliefs and practices are. I did not want to add to this debate and
the animosity it can create among good people in our community. But,
when I see the hypocrisy and hate demonstrated by actions like the
Eagle Scout poster boy for the Scouts now being banned and not
allowing a religion badge for one religious denomination while
automatically making every male child member of another church a BSA
member, I am saddened and deeply ashamed. I can only hope and pray
that BSA changes by the time my grandsons are of scouting age or that
some other viable, healthy and ethical alternative has been created.
I just realized why I feel so strongly that I need to write this -- I
feel violated, lied to, ripped off, misled, cheated, betrayed. It's
about time the national BSA "Come Out of the Closet" and show who and
what they really are. I thank the United Way and news media like 60
Minutes who have helped. I believe the BSA will look back on this
Intervention in a few years and be thankful for others having cared
enough to save them from self destruction.
