[Winona Online Democracy]
I'm sharing this just so others understand how complicated this
situation is in China.
Before the airplane collision, China had arrested on two different
occasions, US permanent residents who were visiting in China. These people
were charged with spying for the US. One of these people is Gao Zhan, a
friend who I went to graduate school with at Syracuse University.
I won't try to repeat the story here, it is better to look at the NY
Times or CNN to get the details, but the fact is that she has been charged
as being a spy and has been separated from her husband and 5 year old son.
Gao Zhan "confessed", but who wouldn't if their child's life was at stake!
Gao Zhan had been in line to receive her US citizenship. She was a fellow
at the American University. She had received funding from the US for her
research. It seems that the Chinese government is using these funds and the
fact that she visited Taiwan as evidence of her guilt.
A variety of things are being done for her release. President Bush has
spoken directly to the Chinese officials asking for her release, but it is
now a more complicated matter.
