While I am open to alternatives in this area, I don't think a different font will work all that well. It needs to stand out and be clearly a different thing than, for example, sample program code. A larger font will cause many of the method/function syntaxes to wrap and IMHO that would be worse. A different color would be nice but DocBook does not give you that kind of control, that is a style sheet thing.
Any other ideas on how to make the syntax stand out from example programs?

One thing I don't like too much is the rectangular box around the
syntax line. Would just having the syntax in a different font be
enough to make it stand out?
