I seeded the discussion with the idea of doing an ultra-high-end card
because that absorbs parts costs. But we should not restrict
ourselves to that. We need to design something that is profitable and
relatively quick to market. I don't care what that product is, as
long as it sells.
Maybe there's something even more interesting than audio. Consider
other domains. How about input devices? We could build LCD monitors,
but there are aspects of that which are a nightmare, so I'm wary of
it.
Keeping in mind that what Howard, Andy, and I do best are chip design,
board design, and low-level software development, it would be best to
play mostly on those strengths. If we did audio with an external box,
note that building cases is beyond our expertise; it doesn't mean we
won't do it, it just means that we'll be less effective at that aspect
of the design.

Timothy,
Well sir, I vote for a really good Linux Multimedia/Gaming audio card. Of course doing the 3d audio *right* might prove more than a bit challenging considering Creative has that part of the market somewhat sown up. Maybe drop the folks at ID software, and the folks at Epic ( Unreal Tournement series ) a line as they produce linux titles along with their windows releases.
Ok, so I will hop off of my soap box now.
Gary
