This may be nitpicking, but: isn't your project about *creating*
something free (libre), as opposed to 'liberating something that is not
free'?
I'll nitpick a little myself. The name isn't "Graphics Card
Liberation Project." We're not liberating graphics cards. We're
liberating Graphics by making a FOSS-friendly graphics card.
Reading 'liberation' actually reminds me of groups like the 'Liberation
Front of Palestine' (Monty Python, Life of Brian). That is, people
trying to liberate people/stuff that is already there, but not free.
Graphics is already there. :)
I would consider this an offensive undertaking. Because the stuff that
already exists -- in your case hardware made by ATI, Nvidia... well,
it's not yours. But clearly you don't want to 'liberate' ATI cards.
You are creating a libre alternative. I suggest to use a name
describing the free/libre nature of your design, and avoid the term
'liberation'. IMO the term "free" is just fine. It has known
shortcomings, but it is also commonly used, despite those shortcomings.
(Sorry for my poor wording.)
But in any case, I see your point, and I can imagine that others would
have the same interpretation.
