produce graphics hardware, and it seems out of line with reality

I see what you're saying. Last I checked, there were 552 list
subscribers.
That doesn't even include people who watch us via archives :-)
I understand where Simon is coming from. 552 list subscribers does say
something, even if it does not mean 552 contributers - it means that
at least
552, and most likely a lot more, are interested in producing a FOSS
friendly
card.
