I accessed the list through gmane as a newsgroup for a long time. I just
followed the directions from somewhere, maybe some early wiki page that
was then changed, can't remember.

There may be many gmane lurkers out there.

Right.

And if the subscription-data showed a steady rate of new subscribers,
that would be even better.

Some web-traffic statistics and correlations with public announcements
would be interesting too.
