Regarding the idea of doing an open DVR, BoingBoing had a post today
on the Neuros set-top box:

This just uses free software, not free hardware, but might still be
of interest. From the BoingBoing post, it looks like it has both
TiVo- and AppleTV-style functionality, but I don't know much more
than is said there.
