I hate to point this out to what should be a technically sophisticated

programs, you need either a tuner, a set top box for cable, or satellite
receiver, that has an output for recording.
Sorry, a little late, but you CAN record off MY TV... In fact my last two=20
panasonic's were capable of outputting on SCART#2, either the TV signal, or=
=20
the input from SCART#1.=20
My current TV is capable of outputting several of the inputs, and also tell=
ing=20
the recording device to start/stop etc (VieraLink IIRC, it's a Panasonic).
Yep. I have a TV with composite and audio out. I actually did record from it
a few times, since it's tuner was newer and could get channels that my VCR's
tuner could not. IIRC it even has a timer that turns itself on and off.
Interesting. However, we need to address what new TVs can do. Are
there any TVs with HDMI output?
So, I don't see this as a technically related issue -- you can add a
separate box connected to Ethernet to transmit the signal to be recorded
to your computer. Or, you could just run the HDMI cable to the computer
but you need somewhere to plug it in. It is possible that HDMI to
Ethernet bridges exist.
HDMI to Ethernet would have to compress in real time.
Yes, that would take two Gigabit Ethernet channels (and 3 for 1080p/60).
Not surprising since HDMI probably uses two channels for 1080p/30.
OK, then that won't work. I suppose that there are limits to how far
you can run HDMI without converting it to fiber, but that seems to be
the only currently available answer.
We're having trouble
finding a way to decompress in real time. Assuming video compression is
similar to other compression in that compression is harder than decompression,
I'd say forget trying to compress HD in real time on a consumer electronics
budget.
OTOH, if we are going to be able to record HD video, it is going to have
to be compressed and I presume that if we have hardware acceleration
that it would be in the box.
So, if there are new TVs with HDMI video output, this might be an issue.
