Ok, Well, since I'm going to be upgrading to SQL 2008 soon, and it even says if you use 2000 to use jTDS in BD admin, I'm going to go with that.
Unfornately, it's not working for me. I can setup ODBC datasources from www1 to db1 just fine. I get "Could not verify datasource: Network error IOException: Connection refused: connect " Datasource (jTDS) is configured as (using same credentials as used successfully for ODBC).
