Hi Rob,

The DX "WriteImage" module can create a MIFF file quickly because it does no compression. The ImageMagick "convert" program can convert the MIFF file to, say, an MPEG file. It can run overnight and take as much time as is needed.

If the compression was done by "WriteImage", it would get the job done in one step but would also run slower, I would think. Would that be an advantage? There is value to doing the encoding and compression outside of DX, with any tool you feel is best.

A more complex movie might call for more than just the image-recording ability of "WriteImage". I guess this might be called a "scripting tool". Commercial packages like AVS have had something like this for years. Briefly, such a tool can record almost any change in parameters (such as changing the isosurface level or camera location) and then play it back. Its a great way to create a demo or movie.

This tool should handle all the cumbersome possibilities suggested by
the replies to my earlier question on how to generate a movie file.
Likewise the Image-tool that can output in a number of image formats, it
would be great if the Movie-tool could output in a number of movie
formats.
