CallWeaver may not be everyone's favourite and some may simply not
like it because they feel the ${FOO} + Weaver pattern is already
oversubscribed, fair enough. OTOH, Aperio may not be liked by some
simply because its not an English word, fair enough, too. This only
illustrates that it is rather unlikely that you will find something
that pleases everybody 100%. A poll will therefore be helpful to find
the most agreeable or least disagreeable one.
Please be reminded, that CallWeaver does meet the criteria for being
shortlisted. To summarise, a candidate name
1) should communicate at least one of:
a) being "truly open source"
b) doing things "the proper way"
c) describing the functionality of a softswitch/PBX
2) should be reasonably short and easy to spell
3) must not mean/remind of anything bad in a major language
4) must not be used already in the realm of telephony/telecoms
5) domain needs to be reserved as <name>.org or <name>PBX.org
6) nice bonus but not a requirement to be alphabetically before asterisk
For a detailed discussion on that please refer to an earlier thread
on this list which you can find at

You will find that if you take the above criteria into account, it
won't matter so much whether you are an engineering or a artistic/
creative type. In any event, asking family members is no guarantee
that the quality of suggestions will be any better, especially not if
they are unaware of the criteria.

Branding is important, yes, but branding is also more than a name
alone. Presentation is an important part of branding and ideally, the
candidates are presented for voting not just as plain words, but as a
concept, that is, together with artwork (logo, mockup web page, etc).
On this side we could use a little more help from graphic artists as
it has been difficult to get enough qualified volunteers to prepare
some artwork.
Thus, if you have any family members who are graphic artists,
professional or otherwise, it would be of considerable help if they
would be willing to contribute some artwork for shortlisted names so
that the voting can be done on a complete package.
To come back to the issue of "FOO name sucks", of course this is
rather subjective, but it does raise an important point regarding the
polling process. In order to make the best choice, it may not always
be good enough to pick the candidate which receives the highest
number of votes. If that choice also happens to have a considerably
higher anti-sentiment than the runners up, then it would probably be
better to pick amongst the runners up. In other words, it deserves
some thought whether the most popular, or the least unpopular
candidate should be picked. This can be captured by letting people
vote on each name with "1st", "2nd", "3rd" choice votes or perhaps
with "totally rocks" and "totally sucks" votes, and then evaluate by
vote weighting. Also, if the number of candidates is more than 4 or 5
it helps to have more than one round of polling to let everybody vote
again in a final round on only a small number of finalists. These
issues should be given some thought/discussion before any official
poll starts.
