yeah, the SimpleShadowMapEngine is intended to handle creation and 
application of a SM to the scene all at once.

I have some code lying around that adds a ShaderShadowMapEngine which 
gives you access to the generated shadow map. It also provides a 
ShaderProgram with a function that you can call from your own shader to 
do the shadow lookup (just add the provided ShaderProgram to your 
ShaderProgramChunk).
I'll clean this up a little and commit it.
