This is a bug in GNU tar and that is where it needs to be fixed.... (You've just caused another star/gtar/Solaris tar brawl; you can check for previous edition of the same in the OpenSolaris archives; this is just as well, because I think that we really don't want to repeat them yet again) My first sentence is an accurate summary of where the problem lies, as the archive will enlighten you.
