 I'm not sure if the version is your problem.  Your output didn't give an error 
message.
Just for grins I used the test code and compiled and linked it with the native 
/usr/lib/libxml2.so lib and it worked just fine.  It is such a simple test case 
I can't
imagine why it would take the latest and greatest xml2 revision to pass.  You 
might
want to dig around in the log files and see if you can find the error.  Also I 
see 
/usr/ucblib in there which really should be needed.

 If you don't want to compile all the packages Blastwave has it already compiled
with xml2.  www.blastwave.org
