I have finally resolved it. After reading this discussion, I decided to remove 
the older SMClxml2 package (from SunFreeware), downloaded the source code 
version 2.6.23 from the source browser, compiled and installed it. Then php5 
was then installed successfully. I think the way the Sunfreeware package was 
prepared somehow did not meet the requirements of the php5 configuration. I 
will send an email to Sunfreeware and suggest to upgrade the version of the 
existing libxlm2 package.
