Let me play devil's advocate: If people have the option to continue using the
old package system (with it's action scripting capabilities), then could that
slow adoption of the new pkg format? Or is that just the cost of providing
compatibility?
I think those users will slowly want to move to the newer package
system. IPS provides a lot of additional functionality not found in
SVR4 (to my knowledge):
* remote search
* advanced query syntax (can search for packages with specific
dependencies, etc.)
* ZFS integration (image-update; alternate boot environments)
* handles package renames, obsoletes
* multi-variant packages (one package for SPARC/x86)
* a full set of publication tools
* full network repository support
* a web interface for package repositories, complete with search and
"one-click install" capability
* a graphical package manager (i don't cound prodreg or smc :P)
* support for ssl-authentication based repository access
* the ability to provide your own source for packages that won't
automatically be overridden during upgrades, and to control the exact
priority of software sources when installing software and dependencies
* massive performance improvements for system upgrade scenarios
* only downloads differences between package versions when updating
installed packages
* eliminates the need for patches :)
