I'm going to have to come down on Ed's (Can I call you Ed?) side here.

these are *mailing lists*, NOT Jive-forums. yes, the problem is between the Jive interface (and other similar web-based list readers) and email.

HOWEVER, this is firstly a mailing list, so the standards of the mailing list apply FIRST. And, even in a Jive forum setting, it really does help to quote what exactly you are referring to, particularly from large previous posts. It's distracting to have to read a huge previous post just to figure out what a 1-line reply refers to in that post.

We have conventions to follow for orderly discussion, and the convention for mailing lists is to (selective) QUOTE for a reply. This is not a Jive forum. This is a mailing list, of which Jive is but one interface possible for reading that list. It's not unreasonable to ask that all participants adhere to a standard of behavior, regardless of the method they chose to read the list with.

Edward Ned Harvey,

Please, before you condemn everyone who uses the Jive forums as being l0sers and id10t's, go and use it yourself to post a day's worth of mail replies. Find out *for yourself* how hard or easy it is to actually live life the way you are preaching, because, in the end, unless you walk in their shoes and show thru your actions that you merit people's respect, nobody gives a damn what you have to say. Most of us here have lived with Jive's foibles long enough to realize that there is a fundamental conceptual flaw in trying to gateway between a forum where the entire thread history is presented in the user interface in the order it was generated, and where quoted text is discouraged and bad form and a mail thread where those things are explicitly not true. In other words, it isn't Jive's fault, nor is it the Jive user's fault - from their perspective, they don't see the problem. It is only you, who chose to use a deficient user interface (mail) to follow their conversation, who has the problem....

I am not expressing a personal opinion, such as "copy and paste is
    too much
work." I am expressing an objective position: If you don't quote
    messages,
it's difficult or impossible for readers to know what you're
    replying to.
