Yes, Erik. But few users are old grey beards like us that are comfortable with
listserver and push discussion. The newer generation interfaces w/everything
via the browser, e.g. witness web 2.0, so the reality of the matter is that the
majority of posts come via Jive interface. And as in my opinion, the
suboptimal interaction betwixt the two leaves Mailman as somewhat of second
class citizen, the path of least resistance for me was to ditch listserver
because it's pretty much impossible to fight the Jive tide...
So I was bored and did some counting.
Out of the 15846 messages I've received on Opensolaris lists in 2010,
5208 (33%) were to opensolaris-discuss. This is pretty sad on it's own.
For all lists, 22% of the messages were posted with Jive, but this rises
to 44% of all unique sender addresses, so apparently the email users
send more messages on average. 7% of senders used both Jive and email.
For opensolaris-discuss, 44% of messages were posted with Jive and this
rises to 61% of unique sender addresses. 6% of senders used both.
As such, it's not true that "the majority of posts come from Jive",
except by the single metric of "only opensolaris-discuss, and only if
you count senders rather than messages".
I will say though that I'm surprised there are so many Jive users.
Also, IMHO, quoting what's being replied to is still a good idea if you
don't want all of the people reading email to delete your message
unread. But I can also hit delete without reading if people don't use
quoting :) Bugzilla has the same problem of needing to quote context
manually, for example, and I personally still add quoted text manually
when needed.
Hugh.
