And on new Oracle gear it's 8% of the final price after discounts for your support contract. To me it looks like a way to push clients to buy new gear and get rid of their legacy gear. I think that was the thing that really hurt Sun, very little incentive to buy new gear when things lasts 7-10 years easily. Great for the client, bad for Sun as they couldn't count on a continual stream of server replacements and upgrades. Meanwhile in the x86 space, the equipment fails more often and the refresh cycle for many shops is 3 years for it. If Sun had found more ways to pressure clients to replace their old gear within 3 years, they may have done better. I think Oracle sees this and is using the support contract costs, especially for legacy and non-Oracle gear to push clients in the direction of buying new gear. It makes sense on both ends when you look at the TCO though. There are plenty of old e450s, 220s, v2x0s, v4x0s, and v8x0s that could be replaced with cheaper T3 and M series servers, especially when you consider virtualization. Hopefully Oracle sales is positioning it like that as it makes good business sense.
As for support quality, I think it'll shape up over the next few months. There are always bumps in the road with support after acquisitions. Even HP has problems after they bought Compaq out. *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* Octave J. You need to get the $1000/socket/year contract for non-oracle hw. -- Pasi _______________________________________________ opensolaris-discuss mailing list opensolaris-discuss@opensolaris.org _______________________________________________ opensolaris-discuss mailing list opensolaris-discuss@opensolaris.org
