GNOME is one of 2 graphical desktops that come with Solaris 9 and upwards. When each user logs into the graphical login screen for the first time, they are given the choice of CDE or GNOME. Afterwards, you can change which one you log into using the "sessions" option on the "options" menu as you log in.
The GNOME volume applet is the speaker icon in the bottom righthand corner of the GNOME screen. If it detects that there is no audio device installed, it will have a red line through it. If not, then your audio should be working already. If your volume applet shows your audio is not enabled then post the output of the following command so we can have a look: prtconf -v Cheers Andrew.
