The PCI ID of your onboard sound device is not present in the /etc/driver_aliases file that comes with SXDE, so that would explain why it didn't work until you put OSS in. You might be able to get it working without OSS by adding the following line to the bottom of the file, removing OSS (pkgrm oss) and rebooting:
