Yup, update_drv is the "recommended" way of doing it. devfsadm -C cleans up any
cruft in /dev from devices that have gone away.

What I'm thinking may have happened is that OSS is trying to drive the card,
but is actually ending up using the motherboard sound hardware instead for some
reason. So when you take the card out it just gives up. Try this:

1. Remove OSS.
2. Run the command: update_drv -d -i '"pci10de,1b0"' audio810
2. Shutdown the system.
3. Remove the card.
4. Power up the system.
5. Install OSS.

With any luck the OSS drivers will then attach to the onboard sound hardware as
it should, and will have no memory of the card. If that doesn't work, then can
you tell me whether you have APIC mode enabled in the BIOS?

Thanks

Andrew.
