I went to #xorg on freenode to ask for help, but unfortunately those guys didn't know how to troubleshoot this on OpenSolaris.
They said that there is a newer driver for my card, but they didn't know if it would work as is on OpenSolaris. I guess it won't since you haven't mentioned that. Do you know anything about that? They also pointed out the missing direct rendering and said that dmesg output could be of interest (I attached it here). I asked how they would debug it on Linux... Q: how would you debug that on linux? maybe it's not so different... A: for starters I'd expect it to log more. I'd also look in dmesg and check if /dev/dri/card0 existed and had sane permissions. but I don't know if /dev/dri/card0 is supposed to exist on solaris at all.
