Well, the box was running snv_55b when I made
the initial tests, but I have now live-upgraded it to
snv_77 and bfu'ed opensolaris 2007-12-18 bits on top
of snv_77 before I made that dhcp test.

Did you still have the "rge" driver bound to the
"pci10de,54c" device before you used the update_drv
command to rebind the device from "rge" -> "nge"?

But there is an known / open bug in this area: deleting
a driver binding and installing a new driver binding for
the same device identification requires a reboot!
