On the Mac, getenv() is very compiler-dependent (because the Mac has no
environment).  These settings should come from a file in the System
Preferences folder, not from the (ill-defined) environment.

Is anyone in the core OpenSSL team familiar with the Mac and  willing to
look out for code changes that will be problematic on the Mac? It's
important that we don't slip backwards in the excellent platform support.
Windows 3.1 is another platform that is (sigh...) still important to use.
