WE cannot avoid it: some day you need to send several files to a Windows user: you use a packing tool either because there are many files or because the file had been too fat and can be compressed.
What format to use: most western people I think will choose zip, for me I got a problem: the Chinese file names, after un-packaged on Windows, is junk text because on Linux we all use UTF-8 and Windows Chinese version using different charset (GB18030) So I'd prefer using a archive format that either remember the original charset (so when unpackaging, it does charset conversion) OR simply store file names in unicode and convert to local charset when unpacking. I have tried zip: failed. I also tried tar: no, tar don't do any charset conversion. But: when I receive files from Windows users made with winRAR, the un-packaged files have correct Chinese names! So RAR either store file names in unicode or remembered the charset info. I'd be glad to switch to RAR as my delivery format if that can keep Chinese folder names, also I'd be glad to use zip if it actually have an option on handling charset difference, or I'd like to use Microsoft's CAB format if that fits. The format I choose must be open-able by WinRAR (as every PC in China has this software installed on it). What format would you suggest to use?
