The *clearly*, the default should be the current working ntp server if such a thing is configured, shouldn't it...

Only after we've determined the current value is bad should we be so arrogant to change it. :P

Remember that the user actually get to choose the NTP servers by
selecting 'configure selected packages' for the package ntpconfig, so
you have to bear that in mind too. 'pool.ntp.org' will be there by
default, to replace the existing 3 servers.

OK then, it's time to fix this. We use a standard ntp server if and only if ntp isn't actually running. I'll play a little to find a robust-enough test

I also noticed post_server_install had some SuSE fixes lacking from post_rpm_install.

Hi Dave:

I tend to agree with your points about modifying the config

file, that

is traditionally the way I do it, but I was just wondering

if there was

a specific reason why it was done this way (for ntpconfig).

BTW, even if ntp is running, if you modify the conf file and restart

the

daemon, it should be okay, right?

Cheers,

Bernard

/etc/ntp.conf is generated by the ntpconfig package scripts post_server_install and post_rpm_install and that is what I

am trying

to modify. Unfortunately it does not keep a backup of

the original

conf file which came with the rpm... perhaps this could be

changed...

Let's discuss this here instead of SF.

OK, now that I've looked at post_server_install, a couple

of comments

Why don't you pick up the existing file and modify that?
This will lead to the following Good Things(TM):

a) If ntp is, in fact, running, you shouldn't be a-messin'
with the choice of the server. Here and other places, the default gateway is also the ntp server.

b) You won't need to "remember" the correct driftfile, it will already be set.

c) You only need to change to lines that you actually need to.

Ditto for post_rpm_install, but commenting out all save the server line, which you replace...
