That depends on whether the goal of your project is maintainable code or maximum performance.
Err, I may be missing some joke, or you may have forgotten a smiley face at the end of that sentence... Is maximum performance at the cost of everything else ever a goal in a project?
I would agree to "maximum performance given a certain set of parameters". But not "maximum performance at all costs". Everything is a tradeoff, nothing is ever that absolute.
That being said, shader composition is a tool, and if you don't want to use it, don't. OSG will (probably) not force you to use it, but I for one would find it extremely useful.
