Blender works just fine :) We are using it for basically everything - making models, animations, even exporting physical parameters and collision proxies, etc. However, make sure that you read the documentation for the exporters - there could be surprises otherwise (texture mapping comes to mind). I have used it to model and export even path finding information and metadata for my AI engine during my PhD. If you need a general purpose modeller, it works great. Actually, I prefer Blender to 3DS Max, because Max takes ages to load, ages to do anything complex with the scene and huge amount of disk space. Not very practical when one needs to quickly adjust a position of a door handle or something like that to match a procedural animation and it needs to be re-done several times in a row on a laptop. Moreover, Max doesn't run on Linux, meaning a separate machine for it or dual booting all the time ... Also, I found Python scripting in Blender invaluable for quick writing of exporters and importers. Max can do it too (MaxScript), but the interface is not so nice in my opinion.
